Alexander Devine Children's Hospice
4 year old Cameron who suffers from Spinal Muscular Astrophy Type 2 was reffered to Alexander Devine, where Wallace & Gromit's Children's Charity have provided a grant for a Home Care Team. He and his family attended their 'Hospice on the Road' day which gave them a chance to meet the team as well as other children and their families. The family had a fantastic day and fully engaged in all the organised activities, including music therapy, treasure hunts, arts and crafts and meeting a range of animals including rabbits, cats and even a pony dressed as a unicorn!
Since August, Cameron has had weekly visits from Sarah, one of Alexander Devine's care workers. She works closely with the family, bringing toys and activities to assist with Cameron's care. When his condition deteriorated, Cameron needed a Cough Assist Machine. The family were shown how to use this whilst Sarah was on one of her regular visits. It made the experience much more relaxing and accessible as Cameron was familiar with Sarah. Since then Sarah has decorated the mask which is used with the machine and incorporated a range of play activities to make the machine less intimidating and more 'fun' for Cameron.
The family have benefitted greatly from the care and support they receive from the Alexander Devine team, allowing them to cope on their own between hospital visits.
