Derian House Children's Hospice
We provided Derian House Children's Hospice with a grant to fund their Sibling Support programme. The programme is available to children who have a sibling at Derian and provides activity days, trips, support for parents and teachers, pre and post bereavement care and one to one support to help children come to terms with having a sibling with a life-long illness.
One child in particular who has benefited from their support is Olivia Rushton. Olivia's sister Jessica has brain damage and cannot talk, the family have been coming to Derian since she was a baby. Like most children who have a disabled or poorly sibling, Olivia has experienced many different changes in her young life. Attending the support group sessions and working alongside other children in the same situation as herself has really motivated Olivia and she has decided to push forward to be a voice for siblings like herself. Olivia is now the official Derian House Sibling Ambassador and is helping other children who have joined the programme.
She was recently awarded the Good Morning Britain, Young Hero Award for all of the love, care and support she has shown to her sister. She had the chance to meet Prince Harry and a whole host of other celebrities at the event in London.
Fundraising manager Sophie Saunders said "We are immensely proud of her and all that she has achieved and we think this evidences the need for further support for siblings and pre-post bereavement support."
